When the Civil War broke out, Hitch joined the Confederate Army. He fought in several battles and was wounded in action. After the war, Hitch returned to Missouri and began working as a lawman.

Law Enforcement Career

Hitch quickly gained a reputation for being a fearless and effective officer. He was involved in several high-profile cases, including the capture of the outlaw Jesse James. In 1876, Hitch was appointed as a deputy U.S. marshal. He helped to bring law and order to the Oklahoma Territory. Hitch served as a deputy U.S. marshal for 10 years. During that time, he helped to arrest over 100 outlaws. He also participated in several gunfights and was wounded in action several times.

Personal Life

Hitch was married twice. His first wife, Sarah Jane Bowen, died in 1878. He married his second wife, Mary Elizabeth Cunningham, in 1880. Hitch had four children. He was a devoted husband and father. Hitch was also a devout Christian. He was a member of the Methodist Church and he regularly attended church services.

Death and Legacy

Hitch died on December 28, 1918, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He was 82 years old. He was buried in the Fairlawn Cemetery in Oklahoma City. Hitch is remembered as one of the most legendary lawmen in the Old West. He was a brave and fearless officer who helped to bring law and order to the frontier. Hitch's legacy continues to inspire law enforcement officers today.
