A Cambodian woman who was separated from her sister during the Khmer Rouge regime has finally reunited with her after 40 years. The two sisters were reunited in the United States after a long search and the help of an international adoption agency.

The woman, who asked to be identified only as Sokha, was just 5 years old when she was separated from her sister, Srey Mom, during the Khmer Rouge regime in the 1970s. The Khmer Rouge was a communist regime that ruled Cambodia from 1975 to 1979. During their reign, the Khmer Rouge carried out a campaign of genocide that killed an estimated 1.7 million Cambodians.

Sokha and her family were forced to flee their home in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, during the Khmer Rouge regime. They traveled to a refugee camp in Thailand, where they stayed for several years. In 1981, Sokha was adopted by an American family and brought to the United States.

Srey Mom, meanwhile, remained in Cambodia. She was raised by an orphanage and never knew what happened to her sister.

In 2019, Sokha decided to start searching for her long-lost sister. She contacted an international adoption agency, which helped her track down Srey Mom. The two sisters were reunited in the United States in 2020.

"It was like a dream come true," Sokha said. "I had never given up hope that I would find her."

Srey Mom said she was overjoyed to be reunited with her sister. "I thought I would never see her again," she said.

The two sisters are now living together in the United States. They are grateful for the opportunity to be reunited after so many years apart.

"We are so happy to be together again," Sokha said. "We have so much to catch up on."

The story of Sokha and Srey Mom is a powerful reminder of the importance of family. It is a story of hope, perseverance, and love.

The Khmer Rouge Regime

The Khmer Rouge regime was a brutal communist dictatorship that ruled Cambodia from 1975 to 1979. The regime was led by Pol Pot, a radical Marxist who sought to create a pure communist society in Cambodia.

During the Khmer Rouge regime, Cambodia was transformed into a totalitarian state. All private property was abolished, and people were forced to live in collective farms. Education and religion were banned, and anyone who opposed the regime was executed.

The Khmer Rouge regime is estimated to have killed between 1.7 and 2 million Cambodians, or about one-quarter of the population. The vast majority of victims were killed during the first two years of the regime, when the Khmer Rouge carried out a campaign of genocide against the educated and professional classes.

The Khmer Rouge regime was overthrown in 1979 by Vietnamese forces. Pol Pot and his followers fled to the Cambodian-Thai border, where they continued to fight a guerrilla war against the Vietnamese-backed government. Pol Pot died in 1998, and the Khmer Rouge was finally defeated in 1999.

International Adoption

International adoption is the process of adopting a child from another country. International adoption can be a complex and expensive process, but it can also be a rewarding experience for both the adoptive parents and the adopted child.

There are many reasons why people choose to adopt internationally. Some people adopt internationally because they are unable to have children of their own. Others adopt internationally because they want to provide a home for a child who needs one.

If you are considering international adoption, it is important to do your research and choose a reputable adoption agency. You should also be aware of the potential risks and challenges associated with international adoption.

The story of Sokha and Srey Mom is a powerful reminder of the importance of family. It is a story of hope, perseverance, and love. It is also a story of the resilience of the human spirit.

Despite the horrors of the Khmer Rouge regime, Sokha and Srey Mom were able to find each other and rebuild their lives together. Their story is a testament to the power of family and the human spirit.
