In 1845, Sir John Franklin led an expedition of two ships, HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, to find the Northwest Passage. The expedition sailed from England and entered the Arctic Archipelago in the summer of 1846. However, the ships soon became trapped in the ice, and the crew was forced to abandon them in 1848.

The crew of the Erebus and Terror was never seen again, and their fate remains a mystery. However, the discovery of their abandoned ships and the remains of some of their crew provided valuable insights into the challenges of Arctic exploration.

In 1854, another expedition led by Sir Edward Belcher was sent to search for Franklin and his crew. Belcher's expedition also became trapped in the ice, but they were eventually able to free their ships and return to England.

In 1859, a third expedition led by Leopold McClintock finally succeeded in finding the Northwest Passage. McClintock's expedition sailed through the passage in the steamship Fox, and they returned to England with the news of their success.

The discovery of the Northwest Passage was a major achievement in Arctic exploration. However, the passage is not a practical route for commercial shipping due to the heavy ice cover and the unpredictable weather conditions. Nevertheless, the Northwest Passage remains a symbol of human ambition and the indomitable spirit of exploration.
