Georges Seurat (1859-1891) was a French post-impressionist painter and draughtsman. He is best known for developing the Pointillist style, in which small dots of color are applied to the canvas to create a sense of unity and surface texture. Seurat was a highly influential artist, and his work has been praised for its beauty, innovation, and technical skill.

This volume from Delphi Classics presents the complete paintings of Georges Seurat in one convenient volume. The book contains high-quality reproductions of Seurat's most famous works, including "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte," "The Bathers at Asnières," and "The Circus." The book also includes a biography of Seurat and an analysis of his artistic style.

Biography

Georges Seurat was born in Paris, France, on December 2, 1859. He studied art at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he was influenced by the work of the Impressionists. However, Seurat was dissatisfied with the Impressionist style, which he felt was too loose and unscientific. He began to develop his own unique style, which he called Pointillism.

In Pointillism, small dots of color are applied to the canvas to create a sense of unity and surface texture. Seurat believed that this technique allowed him to create more accurate and realistic paintings. He also believed that Pointillism could be used to create a sense of harmony and balance in a painting.

Seurat's work was initially met with criticism, but it gradually gained acceptance. He became one of the leading artists of the Post-Impressionist movement, and his work has been highly influential on subsequent generations of artists.

Seurat died in Paris on March 29, 1891, at the age of 31. He is buried in the Cimetière du Père Lachaise in Paris.

Seurat often used bright, vibrant colors to create a sense of energy and excitement.
